Excitement in Valencia

In Madrid the weather has been fantastic this autumn. Unfortunately I have not been able to take much advantage of it since I’ve been busy working and studying. At least the course I’ve been taking is over now, but the sunny autumn has turned into cold winter. I shouldn’t complain really, we took a ride today and it is fantastic to be able to do that mid-December. The mornings are grim but during the day the temperature peaks at 12 degrees. Some weeks ago I was able to take a break from studying. Well, I had to, we had tickets for the final Moto GP race in Valencia.

The expectations were huge and we were not disappointed. We had our seats on the blue grandstand, in between the Doohan corner and the Nieto corner thus having a splendid view of all the track from the first corner after the straight almost until the last corner before the straight. It was sunny and warm, out of the wind it felt like summer on the grandstand.

The moto 3 was exciting since the three first on the grid also were aspiring for the championship. Maveric Viñales, Alex Rins and Louise Salom, all Spaniards battling through the race with massive support from the fans making the grandstand sway.

But this was not the only excitement in this race, further back in the line there was a group of riders continuously battling for positions and one of them was Ana Carrasco who finished 8th in the end. She is also the first woman to score a World Championship Point earlier in this season in Sepang. She has said herself in an interview earlier this year that she is not thinking of herself as a female rider, but as a rider. Nevertheless role-models like her make it easier for young girls to dare to try riding and/or racing. I look forward to following her career.

The Moto 2 championship was already settled but nevertheless the race offered excitement. The champion Pol Espargaro went wide in a corner earlier on and the lead was taken by Nico Terol. Two years ago we saw him become Moto 3 Champion at Ricardo Tormo and now we saw him win the last race of the season. Arriving at the last Moto GP race of the season Marc Marcquez had a strong lead, 13 points ahead of Jorge Lorenzo. To win the championship Lorenzo would have to win and Marquez finish no better than 5th.

Well, not likely to happen bearing in mind the strong season Marquez had had. Nevertheless in the beginning of the race everything semeed possible and I could hardly breathe. The race was surely entertaining to the end and Lorenzo did a good race finishing first, even though it wasn’t enough to win the championship. Spanish triple on the Moto GP podium, and a double in Moto 2 as well as Moto 3. A good day for Spain.

When heading back to the centre the train was crowded, and later the metro was crowded. But amazingly enough I managed to glimpse two familiar faces on the platform. Of course events like this gathers bikers from all over Europe but I was not expecting to see two good friends from the Swedish Ducati Club, Gothenburg chapter. Fortunately, my fiancé and I had a few hours to spend before our train so we could all get together for a dinner and catch up. I know I say this often, but the Swedish Ducati Club is one of the things I miss the most from Sweden.

Still no bike but great Moto GP memories

I’m going to post some awesome pictures from the Moto GP weekend in Barcelona. Regarding my own bike-to-be it is a tedious case, yet another promised delivery day has been changed and soon it won’t matter anymore, it will be too late.

Plan A, to ride from Madrid to the WIMA rally in the north of Austria has already, due to lack of time, turned into plan B. This involves a ferry ride from Barcelona to Genoa to shorten the travelling days. But since the ferry ticket can’t be purchased without the registration number this plan is now also at risk. Plan C will be to fly and rent a bike. This is not the journey I want to make since I will miss out on all the countryside riding and the adventure I have longed for since last year. But at least I will get to see my friends at the rally and have a good week there with them.

Now, some sweet memories from Montmeló:

During the pit walk some riders spent a lot of time with their fans, posing for pictures, chatting and signing autographs while other riders were totally absent.

MotoMadrid – food for thought

This weekend I was happy to stumble over the information of a great motorcycle venue in Madrid. It wasn’t that they had bothered to advertise much, I found out by accident during my long and sometimes tedious search for bikes and stores to buy them in. I’m thinking so much of the different bikes and the pros and cons that sometimes my head feels like a spinning top. It is also an emotional and rational battle where my heart and brain rarely agree. Last night, for example, I had a panicky moment when I felt that it would not be possible to part from my beloved Ducati and I went online to see or rather make sure that a touring seat would not solve my problems.

Anyway, I was very happy when I dragged my fiance with me to visit Madrid Motos and feel, smell and eye all the goodies. To his advantage I have to say that he is happy to be dragged along and I think he had a good time.

In this context I’d like to refer to a comment from one of my colleagues. We were in a bar after work on Friday and he had asked me about how my bike-changing plans were coming along. I had answered from my heart and given a bit too much information, I realised afterwards. His next question was to my fiance, and it was phrased something like: “How does it feel to live with someone who has an interest that is not just an interest but takes up 95% of her life?” My fiance answered: “interesting”.

An intrerest we do share is the Moto GP and Formula 1 and it was a nice bonus to see the sweet GP rider Bautista signing autografs for queuing fans. I’m always surprised that these guys are so small. He could probably not reach the ground on a Triumph Tiger 🙂

I don’t quite know how it happened but somehow the Triumph was back on my list a couple of weeks ago. I know it is really out of my league but still it looks so good! We even tried it two-up – I wish I had a picture – I’m sure we looked awesome 🙂

Today it feels like I have made some real progress in the search. After dreading that writing e-mails wasn’t really the way to approach business in Spain, I got some positive feedback from a business place in Seseña. It is on the other side of the city but also close to those nice roads I rode last weekend so I decided to ride over to talk and take the twists back home. It was a very nice and productive chat and it seems like we can do business. I will get more information of possibilities when it comes to secondhand bikes after the Easter. Apparently this is a dead week for business. When making calculations in the shop it even seems possible for me to get a brand new Versys equipped with luggage and heated grips – if I’m only willling to pay a tad bit more than I intended… Hmmm, there was a lot to think about riding home, and the view was amazing.
