Going North | Day 3: St Brice – Cressanges

This hostel is really fantastic! It’s a farm and hostel in one. The owners are English from Lancashire and they are very helpful. I had a thoughtful ride and arrived here a bit troubled but now everything looks brighter.

To begin with my feet didn’t feel good today and my left foot still felt weak. It’s scary and I was actually thinking of turning back. Not so much that it interferes with my riding because I have taken up the habit of shifting gear with my heel. Learnt that some years ago when I had a fractured toe. But the weird feeling of numbness is unpleasant and worrying. I was only two day-rides from home and I wanted most off all to see my doctor. I have no experience of limbs going and staying numb. From my experience numbness wears off when pressure realises. What this is I have no idea, but it seems to make sense that it is connected to the riding somehow. But I have been on longer and harder rides in my life and nothing like this has happened. My heart felt a bit lighter after communicating with my aunt Gun via text messages and I decided to continue to ride and see a doctor if it gets worse or otherwise see one when arriving Gothenburg on Monday.

I was riding on beautiful roads today, but had a hard time enjoying them. My brain was occupied on how to handle this situation, go back home, see a doctor here, push on and see a doctor in Sweden. What if it got worse and I couldn’t continue, how then to go about things with the bike and me? Passing the Harley Davidson store along my route I went in on an impulse. They must have experience of vibrations, was my thought. The boys were very helpful and even though I was more thinking of changing footpegs they started to go through the bike, went for a test ride to feel the engine, and then looked at the chain. They suggested they tighten it and I agreed. Then they looked troubled and showed me that the chain really was worn out. A bit embarrassing for me who tried to explain that the bike had just been on service and no-one mentioned the chain then even though it is on the list of things to check at an annual maintenance.

Now it all seems to be working out well since the host is very knowledgeable regarding mechanic stuff and is helping me out arranging with a garage tomorrow. I certainly hope they can take the bike in for a change of chain and sprockets.

After googling the internet for “numb feet vibrations” I also found some information about the effect of a worn chain and that that causes more vibrations… so hopefully I will get the feeling of my feet back soon to. And hopefully I get a good nights sleep, I need it!

My grateful thanks today goes to:
My aunt Gun for providing medical advice and pointing out that it probably isn’t a deadly disease that causes my numb feet.
Christopher for being supporting as always and listens to my troubles and makes me feel better.
The boys at the Harley garage who hepled me for free out of good will! Merci!!!! …and I hope you read this!

Going North | Day 2: Pamplona – Saint Brice

While packing my bike this morning I got plenty of people asking me if I was about to leave. In a way I was, but loading takes time and car people don’t always understand that. I did get a hint regarding the lack of parking spaces last night when an old Spanish lady tried by using mind power to convince me that I wasn’t allowed to park on that spot, even though I knew I was and I told her so. She didn’t leave until I said it was according to the police and she said she would go and get them and I replied very good.

After I loaded my bike I went for breakfast. I had an alright stay last night, a room with no extras, clean but a bit smelly of cigarette smoke and no breakfast. So I went to a bar nearby to fill up my energy levels before heading off.

This day gave a couple of surprises. Riding out of Pamplona in the morning coolness I was thinking that I had a few hours before the heat would strike but I was so wrong. I left Pamplona in beautiful sunshine and entered France through the clouds on road N 135 shortly after Puerto de Ibañeta.

It felt exotic for a bit, then scary when visibility dropped to a few meters riding the hairpins. Fortunately, I soon went down to earth again and riding was less demanding and frightening.

I rode D933 and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, it is hard, if not impossible, to stop and take pictures in many places. I did get a good shot of these police officers though. They totally discouraged me to ask for directions.

After Mont de Marsan I had chosen to ride though what seemed to be a nature area but it proved to be just a long straight road that went on for ever. Finally it ended and I passed some more interesting scenery and villages and then I reached my destination. A cute bed and breakfast close to Saint Brice.

After check-in and shower I went for a walk. I had declined the optional dinner thinking that I could find a light snack. The environment was beautiful and despite the rainy sky I went for a walk. Actually, my original plan was a swim, because this fantastic place has a pool, but since the sky was grey as ever I figured that a walk would do. I went into Saint Brice and had a look, there is a beautiful bicycle lane here, and I took advantage and walked by it and looked at the scenery.

My greatest thanks today goes to:
The Ducati garage that fixed my heated grips. I got good use of them today – thank you!!!
And to McDonalds France for having nice fish burgers and salads (should have kept the salad sauce from last year though, much nicer than this new one) and for providing picture menus in a land where both food and talking is complicated.

My worries to day regards:
My left foot. Both feet went a bit numb while riding. Especially the left one. While my right foot doesn’t do much during a ride my left foot is crucial because it handles the gears, it went a bit problematic at the end of the day when I couldn’t shift properly. I thought that a walk would fix it, but now I rather hope that a rest and sleep will fix it. This is something that I haven’t experienced in my feet before and it seems weird after only two days of riding.

Going North | Day 1: Alcobendas – Pamplona

First day is coming to an end and I’m ready for bed soon. I’m in the middle of dinner and that will end my day.

It was a long ride, about 450 km and it was baking hot for most of the time. I left home rather late since I came back from the Formula 1 weekend in Valencia last night. On top of that, I had to go to work to pick up my rain jacket which I had thought I could do without when I left for the summer. Watching MotoGP in Assen made me reconsider… actually it rains a lot in northern Europe, and I have probably been cold more than warm in the past, before coming to Spain that is.

I got heatstroke in Valencia on Saturday, and watching the Formula 1 in the sun on Sunday added to that. So it was not the perfect conditions to head out today, but I did my best following my own advice to stop for drinks often, eat even though I wasn’t hungry etc… Despite this, I have a headache and long for bed, but that is after 7 hours of riding in sun, some occasional hail and more sun.

But regardless of the circumstances, I had a great time riding. See my day summarised in pictures:
